The American Board of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (ABPMR) is seeking an Assistant Director of Certification Operations to lead the content development team in creating certification examinations and longitudinal assessments that meet high standards of editorial quality. This newly created position involves managing a small team of editors, coordinating with multiple stakeholders, and continuously improving exam development processes. This role will:

  • Manage editorial roadmaps to ensure deliverables meet milestones and quality standards
  • Facilitate item development workshops and content review meetings with medical subject matter experts (SMEs)
  • Directly supervise and mentor exam editors, and provide indirect oversight to contractors 
  • Serve as the primary exam developer for assigned exams and the staff representative for their respective committees
  • Create exam forms that adhere to industry standards and best practices
  • Monitor item pool health and item banking hygiene; analyze data and report KPIs
  •  Identify and prioritize areas for development and corrective intervention
  • Contribute to the maintenance and evolution of item banking software by documenting user stories and providing UAT feedback for software developers
  • Collaborate with the Director of Psychometrics & Research and the Director of Certification Operations throughout the exam development and test validation process

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field
  • At least 5 years of experience in exam development, including exam assembly
  • Comfort facilitating content review meetings with medical subject matter experts
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the psychometric principles foundational to exam development
  • Demonstrated knowledge of editorial production and project management
  • Experience leading and investing in the performance of editorial teams
  • Writing and editing skills unique to item development
  • Proficiency with item banking software and its maintenance
  • Ability to work collaboratively and diplomatically with multiple stakeholders, demonstrating professionalism and well-developed interpersonal skills
  • Willingness to travel domestically several times per year (<10%)

Note: Role is open to candidates living in the continental United States

Bonus Points:

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field
  • PMP or ICE-CCP certification
  • Experience with medical board examinations
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology
  • Familiarity with AMA style conventions
